TEXARKANA, Tx A tragic weekend for many in Texarkana after the loss of a rising star on Texas High School football team. Leonard Parks is being remembered as a hard worker and a great friend.
Parks mother found him deceased in their home around nine o Saturday night. The cause of his death is unclear and his body has been sent for an autopsy.
At this Friday Texas versus Arkansas High Football game, school officials say football players on both sides will be wearing an LP6 logon on their helmets. Parks went to elementary school on the Arkansas side.
Parks had committed to play at SMU, but TISD Superintendent Paul Norton said he also had academics on his mind. Norton said, “He wasn going to SMU to play football, he was going so he could take care of his mom.”
Monday, Parks teammates returned to the practice field. Norton said, “They were adamant, they wanted to play.” This Friday big game against rival Arkansas high is still on schedule. Arkansas High Head Football Coach Barry Norton knew Parks well. He said, “He had really high goals, worked hard, was as unselfish as could be just a sweet, sweet natured kid.”
School officials are watching students closely as they head back to school after the Labor Day holiday.
Superintendent Paul Norton said, “At this point, it really doesn matter who wins the football game Friday night. Friday night will be about our community coming together to help this family and what can we do moving forward to help our kids get through this.”
