Seeding didn’t mean a thing to Akron, as it took overtime for the 10 Calhan Bulldogs to send the 23 seeded Rams home during Friday night’s first round Regional game.
Akron made the trek to Ellicott with hopes of advancing to this weekend’s State Tournament. Things stayed close in the first, with Calhan taking a 12 9 advantage. Akron junior Gabe Chapin helped the Rams tie the game in the second, putting up 10 points in the quarter himself. At the half, Akron and Calhan were tied at 23 23.
The back and forth battle ensued, as the Bulldogs pulled ahead by two at the end of the third, leading 35 33. A pair of three’s by Akron’s Jaden Hottinger flipped the roles, with the Rams outscoring the Bulldogs 12 10 in the fourth. At the end of regulation, the game was tied yet again at 45 all. Akron put Calhan on the free throw line 10 times in overtime, with the Bulldogs knocking down seven of those. The Bulldogs slowly pulled away, handing Akron the heartbreaking 52 60 loss.
Junior Gabe Chapin led the Rams with 17 points; senior Tyler Wylie had nine points; senior Raul Alvarez had nine points; junior Isaiah Herder had nine points; junior Jaden Hottinger had six points; and junior Dawson McMillion had two points.
What a great group of young men you are raising. My coaching staff and my family made countless sacrifices to help these young men achieve their goals. For these sacrifices, I am eternally grateful. Finally, I would like to thank the boys. I realize there were goals we did not reach, but the character and determination you showed while trying to meet those goals will serve you well. I am very proud of you and extremely grateful to be your coach,” Head Coach Shawn Randel said.
Despite a 9 14 record, the Rams played several top teams within just points throughout the entire season. Akron will greatly miss seniors Raul Alvarez, Tyler Wylie and Tim Gomez, but return several younger players who gained valuable varsity experience.
