While the Raiders on Tuesday introduced Jon Gruden as their new coach, Gruden confirmed that Jets offensive coordinator John Morton won’t be taking the same role on his staff.
Morton calls the plays for the Jets (which is something most offensive coordinators would want to do), and it looks like he’ll be returning in 2018 to do that again.
The Jets this past season finished 24th in Football Outsiders’ offensive DVOA ratings, but Morton didn’t have quarterback Josh McCown down the stretch, due to a broken hand. The overmatched Bryce Petty started the final three games.
Morton started his coaching career from 2002 04 with the Raiders, as an offensive assistant and tight ends coach. Gruden initially coached the Raiders from 1998 2001. Gruden won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in 2002. Gruden last coached in 2008, with the Buccaneers.
Gruden was the Packers’ wide receivers coach from 1993 94, and Morton was a practice squad receiver for the Packers in 1993. After Morton’s playing career ended in 1997, he began working in the personnel department for Gruden’s Raiders.
