pastel doc martens Park and Recreation committee revives partial smoking ban
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) The Wausau Park and RecreationCommittee is set to bring back a proposal to ban smoking in some city parks, with a more targeted approach this time.
Committee Chair Pat Peckham says this approach would only ban smoking in certain areas of the parks, instead of in all parks. “It would cover children’s play areas, athletic fields, places like that.” He compared it to the Eastbay Sports Complex which has a smoking ban in place. “That’s been well accepted and as far as I know there’ hasn’t been any problems with that.”
Following Monday’s meeting the committee decided asking the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would come back to them for consideration in March. The language aims to control smoking near playgrounds, youth sports fields, sports field seating areas, swimming pools, the skateboard park,
and closed shelters and restroom buildings. The committee will also consider signing for those areas and additional cigarette but recpticols in parks citywide.
Previously, the committee had recommended a complete ban in all outdoor parks to the council, however that was narrowly voted down. This time Peckham says areas like trails, park benches, and shorelines would still have smoking allowed.

Peckham feels it’s a compromise that could be supported, saying the all out ban was “too broad, it was going from zero to 60 in one jump. Maybe we only want to go to 30, [meaning] children’s play areas, sports areas, and leave the broader areas alone.”
The park and recreation committee is set to meet again on March 5th. if the ordinance is approved then,
it could go before the common council as soon as March 27th.
